Movies Shine Light on Catholic Tradition of Child Sexual Abuse and Coverup

With the release of the recent grand jury report out of Pennsylvania that details the massive sexual abuse of children by priests and other clergy, some movies on the topic are now resurfacing.

Deliver Us From Evil (Documentary)
The title of this movie comes directly out of the Lord’s Prayer, which is often said in Catholic churches across the world. This documentary came out in 2006 and is about Oliver O’Grady, an Irish Catholic priest who molested and raped 25 children starting in the 1970s and continuing until the early 1990s. He was convicted and served seven years for his crimes while serving as a priest in Northern California and was then deported back to Ireland. As has become evident with the Catholic church, officials simply turned their heads and protected him.

Our Fathers (Film)
This movie came out in 2005 and chronicles the many sexual abuses of children by priests in the Catholic church. It also addresses the mass coverup by high ranking officials in the Catholic church, namely Cardinal Bernard Law who ended his career as Archbishop of the Boston diocese, prior to stepping down amidst the scandal. The movie is based on the book by David France, a senior editor of Newsweek.

Sex Crimes and the Vatican (TV Series)
This TV series was about Colm O’Gorman who was only 14 when he was sexually abused by a priest in Ireland. Although the church knew that Father Sean Fortune was sexually abusive to children, they did nothing about it. When Colm O’Gorman became an adult, he began to advocate for abused children. At the diocese where he was abused, there were more than 100 known victims of child sexual abuse at the hands of more than 26 priests. O’Gorman didn’t just advocate for children, he began to research and dug into finding out about the Catholic church. His work turned up what is referred to as the Crimen Solisitationis, a Vatican decree that stated priests that sexually abuse children are to be protected even at the expense of the molested and raped children.

Spotlight (Film)
Reporters from the Boston Globe were the first to break the biggest story about rampant child sexual abuse and the Catholic church’s attempt to cover it up. Spotlight is a movie not so much about the abuse and coverup, but rather, about the people who were at the core of one of the most damning investigative stories on the abuses of the Catholic church. Released in 2016, it details the year-long investigation by reporters, many of whom were Catholic themselves.
