Vermont to Investigate Abuse by Catholic Church Personnel

In 1854 an orphanage opened in Burlington, Vermont; it would remain open until 1974. St. Joseph’s Orphanage was home to many children over the years, most of whom are now dead. Along with their deaths, many crimes they knew about and experienced died with them. There were many lawsuits in the 1990s related to the orphanage, but until recently some of the more tragic were never heard of.

According to documents there were all types of abuse going on at the hands of Catholic church personnel. Physical and mental seemed to be the most common and widespread, although sexual abuse was there too. An article came out earlier this year that discussed these additional claims. The article, “We Saw Nuns Kill Children: The Ghosts of St. Joseph’s Catholic Orphanage,” by Christine Kenneally brought to light the myriad of abuses and detailed claims of one of the residents who claimed to have seen children murdered. Officials are wanting to delve further into what actually happened and to what extent.
Residents of Vermont have only six years after realizing abuse they suffered has caused them some type of harm to file a case. However, in the case of murder, there are no time limitations or restrictions. Because of this, authorities are wanting to move forward with finding out what truly happened at the orphanage if at all possible.

According to the article, when a group of survivors got together all of the abuse began to come out. More than one person remembered seeing a child murdered. All of them had horrific stories of their own, all ripe with torture and terror. The nuns in charge of the orphanage were some of the most horrific people on earth, and clearly not supervised in any manner.

While there’s not much authorities can do, they are willing to take action where they can. They have asked for anyone who lived at the orphanage to come forward and tell their story, or anyone who had a relative or friend who knows anything. The Vermont Attorney General said there was a lot of work to be done and no telling what a timeline for investigation looked like. The Vermont Roman Catholic Diocese agreed to support the investigation.

The article came out just before the Pennsylvania grand jury report of widespread sexual abuse of children by priests and the coverup by high ranking church officials was released, showing a long and sordid past of the Catholic Church.
