Several years ago, St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville Minnesota resolved seventeen claims with sex abuse survivors against monks who had served in the abbey. This obviously generated a lot of media attention. St. John’s is amongst the most well known Benedictine monasteries and current facts have uncovered a history of abuse that stretches back dozens of years. Clearly there was a crisis connected with abuse in the community. In 2016, a document with over 12,000 pages specified exactly who seemed to be involved, and how the cover up was.

Most recently, three more names ended up being included with an expanding record. Casimir Plakut, James Kelly and Augustine John Strub had been all named as individuals who were very likely to have committed abuse. All three mean are dead and had departed from the church by the time of their deaths.

As part of the damage control, the abbey seems to want the public to trust that the issue ended with the original monks who were formally named, yet there is no way to know just how many have been responsible for indecencies throughout the lengthy history of the abbey. As the epidemic of abuse in the Catholic Church comes to light, the Vatican has set out to weigh in around the issue.

The files that the church has presented show that leaders plainly overlooked early indicators and did little to nothing to stop accused monks and priests of interacting with those under 18, traveling and also belonging to the religious organization. It's still uncertain exactly how the inclusion of several more names to an increasing list will affect the abbey in Minnesota. Hopefully it will trigger stricter oversight and reporting so this problem can be eliminated.
