Honolulu, Hawaii Adds its Name to Long List of Locations of Abusive Priests

A recent grand jury report out of Pennsylvania states 301 clergymen within their six dioceses sexually abused over 1,000 children over a period of years. These are just the verifiable accounts; it is believed there are many more victims. In a domino effect, other churches throughout the nation have been found to have the same problem: priests doing what they wish and having it covered up by other priests and higher ranking officials within the church, all the way up to the Vatican. The lists of states, and countries, where abuses occurred keeps growing longer, and Hawaii has just added its name to that list.

What seems to be the fall from grace of the Catholic Church has caused much conflict within it. Many are standing behind the church saying that it’s the men who are in charge that are corrupt, not the church itself. Others understand the gravity of what has been going on for years and how leaders of the church have done what they can to cover up the many crimes, and are turning away from the church. Other parishioners are arguing about how to tithe as they don’t want their money going to lawsuits but rather to do the good works it is supposed to be intended for.

First Bishop Publicly Accused of Wrongdoing

In 1989, David Figueroa was living in Florida working as a cook. He stated that Msgr. Joseph Anthony Ferrario of the Honolulu Diocese had sexually abused him. Due to Hawaii’s statute of limitation, Mr. Figueroa was unable to take action against Msgr. Ferrario, who denied the claims repeatedly.

Another victim of abuse filed claims against Father Thomas Adamson and won $3.5 million which was reduced after appeal to $1.04 million. Even though allegations against the Father were taken over a span of 22 years, the Catholic Church kept moving him to new assignments, ignoring his actions and not alerting law enforcement.

There are numerous other Catholic priests and clergymen who have had allegations placed against them in the state of Hawaii. Some have merely apologized while others have lost their jobs and been convicted. The Catholic Church in Hawaii is proud to promote the fact that the first zero tolerance policy on sexual abuse in the church was started in their state during the early 2000s, but in light of the Pennsylvania grand jury report, it looks as if the church still has a long way to go.
