Kentucky attorney general seeks permission to investigate state dioceses for sex abuse
In 2018, a Pennsylvania grand jury released a report that shed light on sexual abuse in 7 of the state’s 9 dioceses. Investigators looked into claims of abuse by over 1,000 people, made against 301 priests. In addition to interviewing witnesses, they obtained damning internal church documents about the way the institution protected the predators. But while this report focused on just one state, it’s clear that it is just the tip of the iceberg, with similar secrets waiting to be uncovered all around the country.

Could similar grand jury reports be produced for other states? Kentucky may be the next to do so, if the state attorney general’s office gets its way. They have asked the legislature to give them permission to convene a similar grand jury: Deputy Attorney General J. Michael Brown said “We are working to secure justice for individual survivors who have reached out to the Attorney General’s office.” Their office has been in touch with Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, who has spoken out strongly about the shocking revelations in the report.

It is clear that many feel the church in Kentucky hasn’t done enough to address the problem. In the early 2000s, the Archdiocese paid $25.7 million to 240 alleged victims of priests and other church personnel. And in 2018 abuse victims and advocates held a protest at Cathedral of the Assumption calling out the church’s inaction. Survivors and leadership of SNAP spoke out, with one former victims pointing out that the pizza chain Papa John’s had been more proactive about removing a sexual predator from leadership than had the church.

Their demands? Advocates from Snap say churches should: fire not just abusers but anyone who knew about their actions but failed to take action; stop any financial aid to former priests who committed abuse; release the names of any credibly accused clergy; and stop requiring confidentiality agreements from accusers. Many of these changes have already been made in parishes around the country, and some are now in place in the archdiocese of Louisville. Archbishop Kurtz has also apologized to victims in a 2018 open letter that acknowledged the way the church’s actions had hurt and revictimized some survivors.

An official grand jury report can only speed up this process of exposing predators, and hopefully granting some peace to victims. As of September 2018, the attorney general’s office was drafting legislation to put before the legislature at Frankfort.
