One of the many lurid discoveries in the recent Pennsylvania grand jury report was the fact that many bishops would issue secret payments to victims of sexual abuse and require them to sign confidentiality agreements in order to receive payment. If the victims went back on their word and started communication to the public that the abuse took place, the Church would then be allowed to sue for their money back.

After the agreements were signed, many abusers were sent back to their respective ministries where they could abuse more kids. Now to most reasonable people, this sounds absurd. Why would the Church force victims to keep silent? How is a victim supposed to heal if they can’t confront and publicly accuse their perpetrator? How are we supposed to deter future criminal acts if these deviants are allowed to operate under the cover of darkness?

They say that sunlight is the best disinfectant. The release of the Grand Jury Report has been a real eye-opener and is an impetus for many states to start to reexamine the laws on their books. Some state attorneys general are also proceeding with investigations in their own respective states. These secret settlement agreements are a betrayal of justice and the public trust. Hopefully more criminal activity is exposed, the perpetrators are brought to justice, and the victims are given their day in court.
