Utah Diocese Lists Names of Abusive Priests

The recent Pennsylvanian grand jury report detailing extensive abuse of priests and the coverup by Catholic church officials has many people talking. The 301 named priests sexually abused more than 1,000 minors across the state. The coverup was extensive and in some cases went all the way up to the Vatican. In some instances, when law enforcement was investigating, they were purposely mislead.

The report detailed horrific sexual abuse ranging from groping to rape - orally, vaginally, and anally. Many of the victims were prepubescent males, although females and older children were also abused. The common theme among the many victims was that the church didn’t care. When a priest was found out he was moved to another parish where he had a whole new choice of victims or those who worked with him just looked the other way. In some parishes, multiple priests were involved knowing exactly what the others were doing: the same thing they were, abusing the most innocent.

Since the ghastly report came out, Catholic churches and dioceses across the nation have had varying responses. Some have vowed to work with law enforcement and do what they can to change the image of the church and how it responds to priest pedophiles. Others have agreed to list past abuse by all priests in their church. In a few instances, leaders of some churches have said there’s no reason to list any priest who has died as there’s nothing that can be done anyway. This is another form of coverup and no way to help victims to heal.

The Pope has responded to the report out of Pennsylvania by saying since more abuses occurred earlier it was proof the church was doing better. Investigators are concerned that claim is inaccurate as they believe its possible that fewer victims have been reporting the abuse.

Utah Lists 16 Recent Priests Accused of Child Sexual Abuse

In an effort to promote transparency in Utah, the bishop at the Salt Lake City Diocese has said he will publicly disclose any credible allegations against priests in Utah going back almost 60 years. To date, he has listed 16 names of accused priests that started in 1990. The most recent allegation occurred earlier this year, and the one before was reported in 2016. It is the hope of the Salt Lake City Diocese that by listing the names it will show everyone the commitment of the church to provide a safe environment for children.
