Rhode Island Another State to Witness Child Sexual Abuse by Priests
Rhode Island has itself been rocked by learning of sexual abuse of children at the hands of clergy. Although they faced a similar problem as the one put forth by the grand jury report out of Pennsylvania, it was 20 years ago. This new evidence that has been brought forth is creating a vivid memory for some, although the church would like nothing more than for people to forget.

The Pope had a short response to the report and in the past has ignored warnings about abusive church leaders that were given to him. For many in the church, his short response is offensive and wrong. He tried to turn the reports findings into a positive by saying that over the years the reports of abuse have lessened. However, experts are afraid that many of the most recent victims simply haven’t come forward yet.

Several people in Rhode Island protested at a cathedral prior to Bishop Thomas Tobin speaking. Tobin was in Pennsylvania from 1992 to 1996, working in one of the dioceses targeted in the report. The protesters were calling for Tobin to resign. He declined he had any involvement and stated his duties with the church were in no way related to the misconduct going on. The protestors felt he had a moral responsibility to step down and by not doing so he was continuing the problems of the church. They didn’t believe he knew nothing about any abusive priests or what was going on.

Defense of the Church in Rhode Island
A Rhode Island State Police retired Major, Kevin O’Brien, was a lead investigator in 2015 for allegations of abuse within the Providence Diocese. He has publicly gone on the record saying that his state is not Pennsylvania and that after the abuses came to light in the church 20 years ago, many policies were put into place to prevent the abuse going forward. Some of those policies included an in-depth screening process and alerting law enforcement of all allegations of sexual abuse even if it the allegations seemed to have no credibility.
O’Brien went on to say that for the last 20 years the church there has aggressively investigated claims and was working with complete transparency. While this may all be true, the Catholic Church as a whole has a long way to go in changing the minds of many people, including the protestors.
