SETTLEMENTS AND BANKRUPTCIES IN CATHOLIC SEX ABUSE CASES
The total of settlements against Catholic dioceses in the United States has reached more than one billion dollars. In 2007 alone, there was more than half a billion dollars spent on sexual abuse case settlements. In addition, at least 13 dioceses have filed for bankruptcy as a result of the sexual abuse cases filed against them.

The first major Unites States settlement in a sexual abuse case in the United States was against the Diocese of Dallas, Texas, in 1997. The victims of priest Rudolph Kos initially received a jury awarded settlement of $119.6 that was reduced on appeal to $31 million. In June 2003, 240 victims in Louisville, Kentucky, received a $25.7 million settlement. An $85 million settlement was reached with 552 victims in Boston, Massachusetts, in September of the same year.

The first diocese to file for bankruptcy was Portland, Oregon, in July 2004. The diocese settled with over 100 victims for $53 million. The Diocese of Tucson, Arizona, filed for bankruptcy that September after reaching a $22.2 million settlement. In December 2004, the Diocese of Spokane, Washington, became the third diocese to file bankruptcy after arriving at a settlement of around $48 million.

The Diocese of Orange in Orange County, California, reached a $100 million settlement with 87 victims of more than 40 church officials in 2005. October 2006 saw the next diocese to file bankruptcy in Davenport, Iowa, as it was facing accusations of 15 victims of Bishop Lawrence Soens. The Diocese of Phoenix, Arizona, and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, California, both settled with victims in December 2006 in the sums of $100,000 and $60 million, respectively.

The year of 2007 saw the largest amount of sexual abuse settlement payouts. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles was ordered to pay $16 million to the victims of Father Mark Falvey, and then the archdiocese settled with over 500 victims for $660 million. That year also saw the Diocese of Charleston, South Carolina, pay $12 million in a settlement and the Diocese of San Diego agree to a settlement of almost $200 million. San Diego also became the largest diocese to file for bankruptcy following that settlement.

The Diocese of Fairbanks, Alaska, filed for bankruptcy in 2008 while facing over 130 lawsuits, and individual settlements were paid in the dioceses of Sacramento, California; Memphis, Tennessee; and Savannah, Georgia. The Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware filed for bankruptcy in 2009 the day before a sexual abuse trial was set to begin. In 2011, the Archdiocese of Milwaukee filed for bankruptcy after it failed to negotiate a settlement with victims in over 23 lawsuits. The dioceses of Gallup, New Mexico, and Helena, Montana, entered into bankruptcy protection in 2013. The Archdiocese of Saint Paul and Minneapolis and the Diocese of Duluth, both in Minnesota, filed for bankruptcy in 2015. Minnesota became the first state to have three dioceses file for bankruptcy with the Diocese of New Ulm’s filing in March 2017.
