SETTLEMENTS AND BANKRUPTCIES IN CATHOLIC SEX ABUSE CASES

The total of settlements against Catholic dioceses in the United States has reached more than one billion dollars.  In 2007 alone, there was more than half a billion dollars spent on sexual abuse case settlements.  In addition, at least 13 dioceses have filed for bankruptcy as a result of the sexual abuse cases filed against them.

The first major Unites States settlement in a sexual abuse case in the United States was against the Diocese of Dallas, Texas, in 1997.  The victims of priest Rudolph Kos initially received a jury awarded settlement of $119.6 that was reduced on appeal to $31 million.  In June 2003, 240 victims in Louisville, Kentucky, received a $25.7 million settlement.  An $85 million settlement was reached with 552 victims in Boston, Massachusetts, in September of the same year.

The year of 2007 saw the largest amount of sexual abuse settlement payouts.  The Archdiocese of Los Angeles was ordered to pay $16 million to the victims of Father Mark Falvey, and then the archdiocese settled with over 500 victims for $660 million.  That year also saw the Diocese of Charleston, South Carolina, pay $12 million in a settlement and the Diocese of San Diego agree to a settlement of almost $200 million.  San Diego also became the largest diocese to file for bankruptcy following that settlement.
