When details have been circulated outlining the reality of sexual abuse by priests in Catholic dioceses, the results have been quite surprising. In 2009, the Connecticut Supreme Court instructed the release of thousands of legal documents from legal cases filed against predator priests.
The court decision stated that beginning in the mid-1990s, twenty-three actions alleging sexual abuse by Roman Catholic clergymen employed by the diocese were filed. Throughout pretrial discovery in those cases, sealed certain records and information that had been obtained during discovery. This is not unusual. In a case of this kind, a lot of damning information might inflame a potential juror, making it difficult to have a fair trial down the road. Still, it is an unfortunate part of our legal system. Keeping damaging information secret doesn’t always seem like the right thing to do.

The material that was ultimately released was made up of over 10,000 pages of papers. And now we can see why a judge might seal some of the information. Included in the papers were accusations that diocese took predator priests and merely shuffled them to another destination, rather than tackling the problem head on. This obviously put other children at risk, and is really hard to defend.
The Bishop claimed that he had implemented the policies at the time by dispatching problem priests to treatment and never letting them work again until they had been cleared to do so by mental health professionals, but that these guidelines had since been changed.

In 2002 the Bishop issued an apology. However, he retracted his apology ten years later. And claimed that he had handled the situation very well. This incensed many victims. Hopefully as more abuse comes to light, our culture will start to adopt a more serious approach to protecting children and shaming those who did little to protect them.
