Crimes of Catholic Church Amplified in North Carolina

In more cases of abuses by Catholic priests, North Carolina is additional proof of widespread sexual pedophilia of children and abuse of adults and mass coverup. New proof has just surfaced that leaders in the Catholic Churches in North Carolina moved priests who had been abusive to other parishes to carry on their duties, but not until years after the abuses had been reported. Documents going back to the 1980s showed the church’s involvement and specifically showcased two priests.

Although church leaders responded by saying the way they had handled it was a “moral catastrophe,” in some cases they simply ignored the information that had been given to them. One such incident happened when a man named John Mohr was groped by a priest prior to confession. He had never seen the priest before and was 30 years old at the time of the incident. He said the priest keep talking about other topics not related to his confession and then just reached down, put his hand on the man’s genital area and started rubbing him. Mr. Mohr, in shock and not sure what to do, said he spoke his confession and left. Once he left he kept questioning what had just happened to him.

The man who allegedly did this to him was Al Gondek, a priest from a nearby church. After Mr. Mohr went to complain to church leaders at the Raleigh Diocese, they just kept passing him on to talk to others but nothing happened. The church leaders said that Father Gondek denied the accusations so all they were willing to do was offer him six months of counseling. Mr. Mohr requested Father Gondek be sent back to his original religious order. His previous order said Father Gondek had an independent professional assessment and he then continued working as a priest.

When Gondek was eventually transferred to a diocese in Charlotte, Mr. Mohr wrote to them explaining what happened and they swept it under the rug. They did nothing to address what happened and eventually went on to say that Father Gondek had done nothing wrong as Mr. Mohr was an adult at the time so his actions weren’t a crime, they were a personal matter.

But in documents uncovered by reporters at local news station WBTV, Father Gondek had accusations against him by minors and evidence suggested he had provided alcohol to a group of students while working in Philadelphia. Years after his actions against Mr. Mohr, Father Gondek faced more allegations of sexual abuse of minors and was removed from being an active priest in 2015.

Reporters from the Boston Globe in 2002 and those from WBTV just recently, have been able to help victims and hold the Catholic Church responsible for what many see as gross negligence and coverup of heinous crimes.
