People have been practicing Catholicism in Florida since Ponce de Leon showed up there in 1513. The state is like the rest of the country for the reason that Catholics compose about one third of its population. And it is normal in something else, also: sad to say, many revelations have come out about child sexual abuse committed by its priests.  In the many years since 1966, Miami archdiocese has paid for $26.1 million in settlements and associated costs associated with sexual misconduct accusations. Many associated priests, while some called some other employees and volunteers. A total of forty-nine of the 4,433 priests who have worked there in the past 50 years have been accused of sexual misconduct, including abuse of minors.

But while that quantity sounds high, you can find an additional even more alarming reality. Estimates from around the country have indicated that 2.5% to 7% of diocesan clergymen have already been credibly accused of sexual abuse. That suggests that there are likely many more predators involved with the diocese, waiting to be discovered. In 2018, six Pennsylvania dioceses were the subject of an extensive grand jury report on clergy sexual abuse. The final results turned up 301 abuser priests and revealed a pattern of authority figures looking the other way or even supporting the accused molester advance their career. Now, it appears to be more and more likely that other states would be the subject of similar revelations.

An event from 2012 helps explain why, in the absence of investigations like these, victims have not always come forward. In that year Tony Simmons, a decorated US Army veteran who was then 34, accused Reverend Rolanda Garcia of abusing him when he was 16 years old. This took a great deal of courage.

Even before church officials noticed Simmons suit, the archdiocese issued an unprecedented statement on Tuesday indicating that if the news media planned to write a balanced story, correspondents must ask Simmons’ attorney where he located him as a client, and why he took so very long to come forward.  Can you imagine asking a victim of child sex abuse such a question?

Garcia had been accused of abuse on 3 previous occasions. Each and every time, he was suspended but then went back to his post.   In the future, the church must handle sexual abuse with increased seriousness or transparency if abusers are to be revealed.
