Church Sexual Assault Lawyer Maryland

Maryland has joined the ranks of states nationwide that will be reviewing Catholic church records that pertain to sexual abuse of children. This is in response to a scathing grand jury report that came out of Pennsylvania in August 2018. The report stated that 301 clergy had sexually abused more than 1,000 children over a span of years, with church officials covering up the abuse.

William E. Lori, the Archbishop of Baltimore, has stated that he will fully work with Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh. The Archbishop has said that he does believe the church is in a crisis relating to trust, and he hopes that by opening up the records he can add to the transparency of the church. He understands that many people are skeptical of how the church has handled issues of child sexual abuse in the past.

In September 2002, the Archdiocese of Baltimore addressed the issue of child sexual abuse by publishing 57 names of priests and other clergymen who had been accused of the abuse.  Since then, an additional 18 names were added prior to August. Since August, another 10 names were added. These newest names came from the grand jury report out of Pennsylvania of priests who had previously served in Baltimore.

Asking Victims to Come Forward

It is the policy of the Maryland AG’s office to not comment on if they are conducting an investigation. However, AG Frosh has asked any victims of child sexual abuse, whether at a school or place of worship, to come forward. The AG’s office has an online link that can be filled out and then can be sent as an email to the office.

There is a large number of Catholics in Maryland and many who are concerned about reform in the church want the church to take action. They feel that transparency leads to accountability and at this point there’s not much else the church can do besides cooperate with law enforcement and be willing to be honest about past abuse and coverup.
Baltimore is the home of many firsts for the Catholic church in the U.S. It lays claim to being the home of the first cathedral, having the first U.S. bishop, the first Catholic diocese, the first Catholic archdiocese, the first black nun order, and also the first black parish. Baltimore is also the home of St. Mary’s Seminary which was the first place in the U.S. for priests to train. With so many firsts in the U.S. Catholic church, it will be interesting to see if Maryland will be the first to take real action in stopping the abuse and coverup of guilty priests.
