In unsettling news, it has recently come to light that priests charged with sexual abuse have been protected and had their criminal acts concealed by the Catholic Church. Because of their inaction, the Catholic hierarchy has brought criticism onto itself for its lack of measures in removing, reporting, or laicizing the charged priests. There have even been several demands Pope Francis to resign, which are falling on deaf ears.

Previous Vatican official Carlo Maria Vigano charged Pope Francis of ignoring the many years of sexual abuse perpetrated by Cardinal Theodore McCarrick. According to Vigano, Pope Benedict XVI had required Cardinal McCarrick to be sanctioned and to live his life in prayer and seclusion, but astonishingly Pope Francis removed these sanctions after becoming pope in 2013. Defenders of the pope have countered this request for resignation from Vigano as an official action by the traditional clergy who oppose Pope Francis’ inclination towards progressive change.

The Pope has also experienced criticism recently from progressives in the church. They point out that the hierarchy hasn’t done enough to cope with the decades of harm the sexual abuse scandal has done to the church and more importantly, to the victims. Many victims are finding the pope’s earlier dismissals of the mistreatment harmful, and he was met with protests when he recently traveled to Ireland in 2018. Some are theorizing that this is having an impact on the Pope’s popularity, and even on his ability to draw large crowds.

Settlements in United States proceedings have exposed documents proving the Catholic dioceses’ desire for moving priests accused of sex abuse instead of offering any sort of punishment. Only after many years of moving between parishes were repeat offenders removed from the public, often as a result of retirement as opposed to any punishment afforded by the church. Dioceses were also shown to have failed in their obligation to report accusations to the proper law enforcement agencies. As a result, several lawmakers around the country have made reporting sexual abuse accusations obligatory, and this trend is definitely catching on.

Marie Collins, an Irish sex abuse survivor who had been a member of the Vatican’s Commission for the Protection of Minors, resigned from the commission due to the Catholic hierarchy not putting the basic safety of children first. She mentioned that the church managed that as it had dealt with the entire abuse scandal, by declaring one thing in public and behaving differently behind closed doors.  Hopefully more people follow Marie Collins lead and show courage in exposing the Church.
