Although it seems as if the walls of the church are starting to crumble and come down, there are still those in positions of power who are trying to protect and uphold the church. One of those people is Gregory Aymond, the Archbishop of New Orleans. He and other bishops in Louisiana are still trying to decide if they will release any names of priests that allegations have been made against. According to the Archbishop, no new credible allegations have been made in over 10 years. Many think this begs the question of why protect old crimes?

Support Groups Help Survivors
There is a support group for people who were sexually abused by clergy, called SNAP. The acronym is short for Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests. The former director of SNAP, David G. Clohessy, has called on the Archbishop of Lafayette to release the names of those accused, much like other Archbishops have done. He believes the survivors deserve that and that it would help with the healing process and lend credibility to the church that talks about ‘openness.’ Many feel the church has been anything but open when it comes to sexual abuse against children and the widespread coverup from church officials.

Still Not Talking
Although there are over 200 dioceses in the U.S., only 30 have come forth with a list of priests that were accused of sexual abuse of children. The Lafayette Archbishop has stated that naming dead priests who cannot fight the accusations made against them isn’t fair to their family members. However, the grand jury report out of Pennsylvania listed numerous priests, some that had died, and there was enough proof from multiple victims.
