For survivors of sexual abuse, having their claims taken seriously can be a step toward healing. This is especially true in cases where the abuser was a respected community member, such as a priest or deacon. Victims are further harmed by seeing the predator who harmed them treated as a trusted and admired member of the community, and knowing they might not be believed if they spoke out. For many Catholic church sexual abuse victims, the pain of seeing this happen has gone on for decades.

One diocese, Fort Wayne-South Bend in Indiana has taken steps to expose predators and give victims justice by releasing a list of names of clergy who have been credibly accused of child sexual abuse.  This list includes 18 clergy, none of whom are currently affiliated with the church. two have been convicted of offenses and are in prison, while others are deceased, and still others have been dismissed or removed from the ministry. Some have only one accuser, while others have multiple accusers—as many as nine.

The event that prompted the release of the list was the 2018 Pennsylvania grand jury report revealing abuse by over 300 PA priests and bishops, as told by over 1,000 victims, and corroborated by internal church documents. The report revealed the scope of the problem and the need for more transparency.

The list is not limited to perpetrators who have been legally convicted, but includes any “credible” accusations. In a news release, the diocese wrote that “For the purposes of this list, a 'credible accusation' against a priest or deacon of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend is an accusation that, after a thorough investigation and review of available information, appears more likely true than not in the judgement of the Diocesan Review Board, and is accepted as credible by the Bishop."

Bishop Kevin Rhoades said his motive was “to help the victims in the healing process. The church failed you," Rhoades said. "For that, I apologize."  The diocese’s statements have emphasized their commitment to transparency; a spokesperson said all accusations that have been reported to Bishop Rhoades during his time there have been forwarded to law enforcement.

The report is part of a new trend of dioceses voluntarily reporting information about child sexual abuse. Since many of the perpetrators are now dead, they cannot be prosecuted or brought to justice; however, their victims can see them publicly exposed. And the publicity around these revelations may inspire other victims to come forward.
