South Carolina has Ties to Catholic Church Sex Abuse Scandal in Pennsylvania

In August 2018, a grand jury report was released in Pennsylvania detailing extensive sexual abuse of minors at the hands of clergy. Many of the victims were boys although some girls had also been abused. In many cases, priests would manipulate the children with pornography or alcohol. The details of the abuse were grim.

Some of the priest pedophiles made the children masturbate them and others were groped. Incidents of rape covered the gamut, with oral, vaginal, and anal all having occurred. However, all of the abuse was covered up by those who knew what was going on, including higher level church officials. Although all of the priests had at some time been in Pennsylvania, many also worked in other states at other parishes. It was the status quo of those in charge to move a priest between parishes or to other states once their abuse came to light. This was done in order to coverup the abuses and no care was taken that the priests would then have access to even more children.

Due to the extensive nature of the crimes and the intended coverup, other states are now questioning if any of those priests served there. Another question is whether or not their own state has the same kind of problems lurking within the walls of the Catholic churches. Attorneys general across the U.S. are not willing to guess at answers. Many states have started their own investigations and are sending out subpoenas to get their hands on all church records. However, not all attorneys general or their offices have the same authority.
In some states, the attorney general can implement a grand jury and have jurisdiction over an investigation into the church and the activity of the priests.

In other states, the attorney general doesn’t have that power. They can initiate an investigation but they have no authority so they need to request help from local district attorney offices. In the case of South Carolina, the AG’s office said it will investigate what it can but there are no pending cases. One of the priests named in the report out of Pennsylvania had served in South Carolina, but he passed in 2006.

Critics of the church have said the church needs to be held accountable by government entities as it won’t address its own problems, as has been shown in the past.
