Between the years of 2004 and 2001, eight Catholic dioceses in the United States declared bankruptcy due to sexual abuse cases.  The first diocese to file for bankruptcy was the Archdiocese of Portland, Oregon in July 2004.  Portland filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy due to two lawsuits filed in the case of Reverend Martin Grammond who was accused of the abuse of more than 50 children in the 1980s.  The plaintiffs in the lawsuits were seeking damages of over $160 million.  The archdiocese had already paid over $50 million settling claims from victims of sexual abuse.

The Diocese of Tucson, Arizona filed for bankruptcy protection in September 2004 after settling 11 lawsuits for an undisclosed sum.  The diocese was facing 22 additional lawsuits at the time of its bankruptcy filing.  The Diocese of Spokane, Washington was the next to file for bankruptcy in December 2004 due to facing lawsuits with potential judgments of over $75 million.

The Diocese of Davenport, Iowa became the fourth diocese to declare bankruptcy in October, 2006.  The diocese had paid over $10 million in settlements since 2004, and it was facing a new series of claims against Bishop Lawrence Soens.  In February 2007, the Diocese of San Diego, California became the fifth and largest diocese to file for bankruptcy.  The filing came one day before the lawsuit against the diocese was due to go to trial.  The diocese had settled claims from 43 people and had failed settlement negotiations with another 143.

In February 2008, the Diocese of Fairbanks, Alaska was the sixth to file for bankruptcy after settlement negotiations stalled with over 140 people with sexual abuse claims from the 1950s to the 1980s.  The diocese blamed the decision on a lack of cooperation from one of their insurance carriers.  The Diocese of Wilmington, Delaware filed for bankruptcy in October, 2009 after settling more than $6 million in lawsuits and other settlements.  An additional 20 lawsuits had been filed against the diocese concerning former priest Francis DeLuca.

The eighth diocese to file for bankruptcy was the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  The archdiocese filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2011 claiming an inability to pay the sexual abuse lawsuits filed against them.  The plaintiffs in the lawsuits against the archdiocese fought the bankruptcy filing, and eventually a $21 million settlement was reached with the archdiocese.  As a result of the settlement, about 330 sexual abuse victims would receive some level of compensation for their claims.
