Attorney General Carr of Georgia Addresses Sex Abuse in Catholic Churches

In August 2018, a Pennsylvanian grand jury released a detailed report of a two year long investigation into child sexual abuse within six dioceses of the Catholic Church in their state. The results of the report were alarming. Over 300 priests or clergymen had reportedly abused more than 1,000 children during the timeframe investigated.

The coverup of the abuse was intentional and widespread, going all the way up to the Vatican.  Georgia Attorney General Carr addressed the coverup of abuse within the church by releasing a statement which offered help to any victims who wish to seek justice within his state. However, in Georgia, crimes such as these are prosecuted by local jurisdictions, not the AG’s office. Carr did say that his office will help local jurisdictions any way they can.
Throughout his statement AG Carr never referred to the report out of Pennsylvania, although most people believe the report is what prompted his statement.

Being a Roman Catholic himself, he did say he was concerned about how the leadership in the church had responded to the crisis. Many people feel there has been an overwhelming lack of concern by church leadership and as the report shows, many in the church turned a blind eye to what was happening right in front of them. Some people believe this is because the church didn’t want anything staining their reputation or that they were trying to protect the church monetarily from an onslaught of lawsuits.

AG Carr also stated, “Let me be clear: any sexual abuse - and specifically, abuse by an adult against a child - is wrong. It does not matter whether sexual abuse occurs in the context of human trafficking, by a friend or family member, a teacher or a coach, a public employee, or, as here, by a priest or church official. It must not - and will not - be tolerated.”

Carr later continued, “If there are priests or others associated with the Catholic Church in Georgia who are known to have engaged in acts of abuse against children, I call on the Church to bring to light those cases and to be an active participant to ensure justice is done. If a priest was responsible for the abuse, then I call on the Church to take immediate action to remove him from the ranks of the priesthood…If leadership in the Catholic Church in Georgia has participated in any way to conceal or shield these individuals from punishment or prosecution, I ask that those individuals be removed from leadership and be held accountable as appropriate as well.
