The Archdiocese of Denver agreed to a $5.5 million settlement in the cases of 18 people sexually abused by three different priests between the years of 1954 and 1981.  17 of the cases involved priests Harold Robert White and Leonard Abercrombie, and one case was against Monsignor Lawrence St. Peter.  All three of the priests involved were deceased at the time of the settlement.  The archdiocese had previously settled 43 other lawsuits and claims against the three priests for a total of around $8.3 million.

The archdiocese admitted to learning of the claims of sexual abuse perpetrated by the priests in August of 2005, and the mediation process began in May 2006.  Participation was voluntary, and the plaintiffs from all but two lawsuits entered into the mediation.  The mediation was led by retired Judge Richard Dana and there was an independent two person mediation panel.

Victims in the case were pleased with the settlement, and they were also satisfied that the archdiocese’s role in covering for the priests was revealed.  According to the lawsuit, Harold White was a serial abuser, and the archdiocese refused to report allegations against him for decades.  His victims were between the ages of 8 and 14 at the time of the abuse, and he was moved to seven different Colorado parishes, hospitals, and schools between 1961 and 1981 as the accusations of abuse were reported to the archdiocese.  White’s files were released as a part of the settlement.

Archbishop Charles Chaput of the Archdiocese of Denver claimed that the archdiocese had tried for two decades to understand why priests would perpetrate abuse and how to prevent it.  His predecessor, now Cardinal Francis Stafford, enacted policies in 1991 requiring the reporting of all allegations of sexual abuse of a minor to law enforcement.

Archbishop Chaput expressed sadness over the abuse and offered to meet with each victim personally in an attempt to help them and their families heal.  Due to Colorado’s statute of limitations, most abusive priests would not face criminal charges, and civil action is limited to six years after the victim turned 18.  This needs to change.

When legislation was proposed to change the statute of limitations for civil suits, the archdiocese opposed it.  Archbishop Chaput did state that the archdiocese would enter into mediation with sexual abuse victims no matter when the abuse occurred.  Colorado’s bishops also support the abolishment of the statute of limitations for criminal sexual abuse cases.
