In what seemed like a million years of negotiations, the Diocese of San Diego agreed to pay $198.1 million to the sexual abuse victims of its priests. Although it was heralded as one of the largest settlements at the time, the victims still took home less than $900,000 after attorney fees and costs. While that may seem like a lot of money to most, it cannot come close to healing the wounds of the victims or make them whole again. That being said, we must give credit where credit is due. The plaintiffs rejected an earlier settlement for less than half the amount, and their tough negotiation tactics eventually paid off.

Victims were relieved by the settlement, but many expressed annoyance at the church leadership’s efforts to obscured the allegations against abusive clergymen. It just seemed like a giant cover up from start to finish. In another shot to the victims, the church tried to file for bankruptcy protection before the settlement deal was reached. To many it just seemed like the efforts to avoid justice and accountability had no end in sight.

The eventual settlement was broken down into several parts, with another diocese and an insurance company kicking in proceeds to make the deal go through. Ultimately, the San Diego diocese couldn’t come up with enough money and was forced to sell some of its real estate. Some think this is a fitting result. However, others make a compelling argument that the church does do good deeds as well, and settlements of this size do take away resources that could be used for fighting poverty, tending to the sick and homeless, etc. That being said, all the money in the world can’t erase the scars and pain endured by these victims. Since we can’t go back and undo the trauma, money is the next best thing. Hopefully the settlement money gives some semblance of relief to the victims and helps deter bad actors in the future. Time will tell.
