North Dakota has Former Priest Extradited to U.S. for Sexual Assault Charges

Across the country and across the globe, the Catholic Church is finding itself under more and more scrutiny. The church has long been what seems like a breeding ground for pedophiles and the unscrupulous leaders who are willing to hide their abuses. An investigative report from the Boston Globe in 2002 was one of the first to detail the extent of the sexual abuse of children and the mass coverup. Although stories have popped up in the news from time to time of other abuses since then, it was largely out of the public eye. That is until August of 2018 rolled around.

Following up on extensive complaints about priests and clergy in the Catholic Church in Pennsylvania, the attorney general’s office there began an eighteen month grand jury investigation. What they found astonished people around the globe. There were more than 1,000 confirmed cases of sexual abuse and rape of children by 301 priests. While these numbers are shocking in and of themselves, the report stated there were likely many more victims numbering in the thousands.

Some of the worst crimes included: a priest who went to visit a seven year old girl from his parish who was recovering from surgery. As she lay hurting in her hospital bed he raped her. Another priest carried his little victim up to his room as other priests turned their head, knowing what was about to happen to the little boy. A group of priests made little boys pose naked on the cross so they could take pictures of them. And the atrocities went on, with church officials turning a blind eye to the problem.

Priest from Philippines Brought Back to U.S.

There were numerous priests listed in the report that had worked in other states. Due to the nature of the crimes, attorney’s general across the U.S. are now starting their own investigations. It seems as if no state has been untouched by the massive child sexual abuse claims, including North Dakota.

Late last year, North Dakota had a former priest named Fernando Sayasaya extradited from the Philippines where he had gone back to live in his native country. He was accused of sexual crimes against two sibling boys during the 1990s while working at St. Mary’s Cathedral and Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church near Fargo.  Sayasaya pleaded guilty and is facing up to 20 years in jail for his crimes.
