Arkansas Catholic diocese reveals past allegations of priest abuse
Among those have observed the unfolding news about sexual abuse in the Catholic Church, many have been shocked and disappointed at the church's reaction. Catholic officials have been reluctant to pay survivors damages to compensate them for their pain and suffering. And they have been slow to reveal details of past crimes and cover-ups, often releasing relevant documents only by court order. This attitude only perpetuates the culture of secrecy that allowed abuse to flourish, and victims have had enough.

One diocese took a different approach. In 2018, Bishop Anthony Taylor of the diocese of little Rock, Arkansas revealed details of assaults committed by 12 Arkansas priests. The diocese stated that the details were based on an internal review it had conducted. Of the 12 abusers named, all had left the ministry by or before 2002, a year in which the church instituted new “safe environment” policies. 2002 saw a series of investigative reports about Catholic church abuse, and widespread awareness of the pervasive nature of these crimes.

Taylor also stated that the diocese had reached out to the Attorney General and commissioned an independent review of their personnel files by an investigative firm. The review would identify other clergy members who may have committed abuse.
The list of names released included information about the priest, where they served, when they left or were removed from the ministry, and the number of victims. Some of the accusations are described as “substantiated” (because an investigation found evidence beyond the victim’s account, or the perpetrator confessed). Others are not substantiated by outside evidence but are described in the report as credible.

The diocese is offering help to known victims. Sadly, many cannot bring legal proceedings, because the statute of limitations in Arkansas runs out when the victim turns 28. Victim advocates around the country have called for statutes of limitations to be extended or done away with.

Voluntarily releasing the list is a healthy step toward transparency on the part of the diocese. The information it reveals is a reminder that such abuses of power should never happen again.
