The Catholic Church has brought many measures in recent times in order to prevent the sexual abuse of boys and girls. Most of the actions undertaken were described in the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People that has been approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2002. To guarantee setup of the Charter, the USCCB created a committee called the National Review Board for the Protection of Children and Young People. The Board commissioned John Jay College to conduct a study to better grasp the scale of the sexual abuse dilemma, and the end result of that survey are known as the John Jay Report.

Safe Environment coaching has been instituted in 194 dioceses in the USA, and adults in those dioceses received training in how to notice the patterns of abusers along with what actions to consider when such behavior is identified. All dioceses also provide codes of conduct that distinctly state what forms of behavior are suitable and what aren’t. Dioceses in America have trained children to be able to identify and report sexual abuse and improper conduct.

Since 2002, the church incorporates a “Zero Tolerance” policy when it comes to sexual abuse. They state that after a priest confesses or is established to have committed an act of sexual abuse that the priest is going to be permanently removed from the ministry. Dioceses are now required to report claims to the proper authorities in combination with performing their own internal investigation. Dioceses now call for psychological evaluation together with the criminal history check for any males who wish to go into the seminary.

The Vatican has organized the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors in 2014 to propose ways to protect kids from abusive priests and employees inside the church. The commission advised the production of a tribunal to evaluate the bishops who had participated in sexual abuse cover ups and who had neglected to defend the kids in their dioceses. This was authorized by Pope Francis, but it has yet to be implemented.
