DEBATE ON THE CAUSES OF CLERICAL CHILD ABUSE

One of the topics for debate as to the cause of clerical child abuse is the issue of celibacy of the priests.  Priests themselves have expressed concerns that their training in the seminary does not properly prepare them for a lifetime of celibacy.  It has been speculated that the reason so many male adolescents have been victims of abuse is because the development of sexual attractions ceased once the priests began their celibacy.  The Vatican has proven resistant to making any changes in the requirement to live a celibate life.

Due to the majority of the reported cases of abuse occurring in the 1960s and 1970s, some psychiatrists and bishop point out that the prevailing opinion at that time was that counseling could cure offenders of sexually abusive behavior.  As attitudes changed in the 1980s, the number of cases reported began to decrease.  Approximately 40% of priests who had received counseling were reassigned and allowed to resume their duties.
Another opinion is that the shortage of priests in Western countries created a culture among Catholic bishops to preserve the number of priests in the priesthood at all costs.  Ensuring there were enough priests to serve parishioners became more important than removing members of the clergy who were accused of sexual misconduct.

Due to the majority of the victims being older adolescents, only 96 of the 4,329 priests studied in the John Jay Report were classified as pedophiles.  474 of the priests studied were classified as ephebophiles, which is a term referring to men whose sexual attraction is to post-pubescent boys.  Men who identify as heterosexual can be classified as pedophiles or ephebophiles who are attracted to male children or adolescents because the disorders are not linked to sexual orientation.  The report speculated that there may be another category of abusive priests that should be identified and studied to improve the identification and treatment of offending priests.

Some church leaders attempted to point to homosexuality among the priesthood as being the primary cause of sexual abuse.  Due to 80.9 percent of the victims studied in the John Jay Report being male, William Donohue of the Catholic League stated that the sexual abuse problem had always been a homosexual problem.  Margaret Smith from John Jay College rejected this opinion, stating that the conclusion that the majority of abusive priests were gay was unwarranted.  She pointed out that participating in homosexual acts was not the same as identifying oneself as a gay man.  She continued that sexual identity and the problem of sexual abuse should remain separate.
