The Cleveland Diocese has almost 700,000 members and is the largest diocese in the state. In 2002, the Boston Globe uncovered mass sexual abuse and coverup by the Catholic Church. Since their report came out, they have run numerous stories on the subject. In response to the reports, the Cleveland Diocese had released some names but now says it will be all inclusive going back as far as their records do. Currently, there are 29 names on the list. According to the diocese, the updated list will soon be released. The Cleveland Diocese is the fourth diocese to release a list of abusive priests. There are a total of seven dioceses in the state of Ohio.

Why Release the Names Now?
Many Catholic churches in the U.S. are making names of abusive priests public in an effort to promote transparency. This is due in part to a lengthy grand jury report that came out earlier this year in Pennsylvania. The report detailed serious abuse of children at the hands of unscrupulous priests and other clergy and a mass coverup of those crimes by leaders in the church. In some cases, the coverup started locally but went all the way up to the Vatican.
The names of 301 sexually abusive priests were given and although they served in Pennsylvania, many of them served in other states as well. Due to this, numerous attorney’s general across the U.S. have started their own investigations into child sexual abuse at the hands of priests and the widespread coverup of those abusers.
The Catholic Church was covering up the abusers for strictly selfish reasons.

They didn’t want the stain on their church and they didn’t want to lose money from any sources who may consider no longer giving to the church if the widespread coverup was discovered. As the coverup has been reported on for all to see and understand the gravity of it, the church has no way of avoiding what it has been for years. Many of the cases of abuse go back for years with proof of church leaders turning a blind eye or doing what they could to cover it all up, including misleading law enforcement.
