History of Child Sexual Abuse in Archdiocese of Dubuque

In 2006, the Archdiocese of Dubuque, Iowa had fallen under scrutiny for child sexual abuse claims that were also rocking other Catholic dioceses throughout the nation. They released names of 14 clergymen who had sexually abused children, where these priests worked, and the years they served. The Archdiocese paid over $100,000 in professional and legal fees during a 13 month period spanning over 2004 and 2005. During that same time, they paid out over $300,000 in settlements and $25,000 to enable victims of the sexual abuse to get counseling or for other related medical expenses.

Of the 14 priests who served between the 1930s and 1990s, ten had died by 2006, only one had been defrocked, and the other three were simply not acting as priests any longer. There had been no legal repercussions. A spokesperson for the diocese stated that it did no good to discuss sins of priests who were already dead, even though doing so would bring to light even further the gross incompetence of the Catholic church in dealing with abusive priests and clergymen.

Interestingly, in 2003, a letter went out to Catholic households across the diocese which consisted of 30 counties. That letter stated there had been 26 priests who had molested children started in or before the 1950s. These men were accused of sexually abusing 55 male children and 12 female children.

Increasing Settlements

Just seven years after the release of the names of 14 priests who had sexually abused children, the Archdiocese of Dubuque paid out more than $5.2 million dollars to over 20 victims. While the settlements are a step in the right direction, the Archdiocese of Dubuque still has a long way to go in fully admitting the many abuses throughout its diocese.
Earlier this year a grand jury report out of Pennsylvania stated that an investigation into sexual abuses at the hands of priests in the Catholic church was widespread and went back for years.

The report stated that in their state alone, over 300 priests had more than 1,000 victims, although they believed that number was much higher. For the Dubuque Archdiocese to start to regain trust of its parishioners, a full disclosure of all information is necessary, in addition to reporting all cases to law enforcement. The coverup of the Catholic church is widely evident, and being proactive in transparency is crucial at this stage in the church’s history.
