The Catholic Church has taken quite a few measures in recent years to try and stop the sexual abuse of young boys and girls. Most of the actions used were described in the Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People which was authorized by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2002. To ensure implementation of the Charter, the USCCB launched a committee called the National Review Board for the Protection of Children and Young People. The Board commissioned John Jay College to perform a survey to better understand the breadth of the sexual abuse problem, and the end results of that survey are called the John Jay Report.

Safe Environment coaching has been instituted in 194 dioceses in America, and adults in those dioceses obtained training in tips on how to notice the habits of abusers and what measures to consider when such conduct is recognized. All dioceses also provide regulations of conduct that clearly state what types of behavior are suitable and what aren’t. Dioceses in the United States have trained children, teaching them how to recognize and report sexual abuse and unsuitable behavior.

The church at this moment requires criminal background checks on all church employees who deal with children. This includes clergymen, staff, and volunteers. Victim Assistance Coordinators have been placed into all dioceses to make sure victims shall be heard when accusations of abuse are documented. Bishop can even talk with victims, and dioceses have healing masses and retreats for survivors of abuse.

Since 2002, the church incorporates a “Zero Tolerance” policy with regards to sexual abuse. They claim that right after a priest confesses or is established to have committed an action of sexual abuse that the priest is going to be permanently removed from the ministry. Dioceses are now required to report accusations to the appropriate authorities as well as completing their own internal investigation. Dioceses now demand psychological assessment as well as the background check for virtually any men who wish to enter in the seminary.

The Vatican has started the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors in 2014 to suggest methods to defend kids from abusive priests and employees within the church. The commission advised the roll-out of a tribunal to gauge the bishops who had taken part in sexual abuse cover ups and who had failed to protect the children in their dioceses. This was endorsed by Pope Francis, but it has yet to be implemented.
