Attorney General Bill Schuette of Michigan Investigates Catholic Church

In response to a recent grand jury report out of Pennsylvania that found 301 priests and clergy had sexually abused more than 1,000 children, states across the U.S. are responding with their own investigations. Michigan is no different. Attorney General Bill Schuette has had records seized from each Catholic diocese in his state. He is trying to determine if sexual abuse of children and a coverup by the Catholic church took place in Michigan as it has in numerous other states. There are seven dioceses located in Michigan.

All dioceses in the state and the Archdiocese of Detroit were served search warrants on October 3, 2018. AG Schuette had said his office would be investigating the Catholic churches in Michigan for child sexual abuse and coverup back in September. According to the AG's website, the Catholic church case is one of three that is currently being investigated and it states the investigation will be thorough and transparent. The website goes on to state, “My department and this investigation will find out who knew what, and when.”

Church Officials Complying with Requests for Information

Although AG Schuette served search warrants, the Archdiocese of Detroit stated it welcomes the investigation in order to promote transparency and healing within the Catholic church. Most likely in part due to the mass findings in the U.S. of child sexual abuse and coverup that went up to the Vatican in some cases, the Pope’s popularity approval rating is at a new low with Catholics across the U.S.

The report out of Pennsylvania also stated that some bishops had the only access to records that remained in a secret archive. This was further proof of the Catholic church’s extensive coverup of abusive priests. Also notable in the report was how the church would simply move a priest from one parish to another as soon as it was made apparent that child sexual abuse was occurring. Some sexually abusive priests moved between states frequently and records show that neither parents nor law enforcement was ever notified. This was done mainly to protect the image and coffers of the Catholic church as a whole.

Since the grand jury report came out, state across the U.S. are responding much like Michigan has. They are advocating for the victims and many states are in the process of changing their laws so that the statute of limitations will allow victims to sue their abusers and the church.
