In 2018, the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, Minnesota, reached a deal with 450 victims of clergy sexual abuse to lead the archdiocese out of bankruptcy.  In the agreement, the archdiocese would pay the abuse victims $210 million, $50 million over the archdiocese’s previous settlement offer.  This settlement was the largest bankruptcy settlement between a Catholic diocese and the victims of sexual abuse.

The settlement came after the archdiocese filed for bankruptcy protection in 2015 following a three-year window opening in the statute of limitations created by the Minnesota Legislature in 2013.  The archdiocese was under fire for revelations that Archbishop John Nienstedt allegedly had a history of covering up for accused priests.  The Ramsey County Attorney’s office filed charges against the archdiocese in June 2015 for its failure to prevent the abuse of children by Curtis Wehmeyer, a former priest.  Ten days after the charges were files, Archbishop Nienstedt resigned.  The criminal charges were later dropped.  Following the resignation of Archbishop Nienstedt, Bernard Hebda was installed as the new archbishop of the archdiocese in 2016.  He issued an apology for the church’s actions in covering up for Wehmeyer.

Bankruptcy proceedings were slow due to discussion between attorneys over how much the archdiocese should pay.  While the archdiocese reported a net worth of $45 million, victims’ attorneys were adamant that the actual value of the archdiocese’s assets was over $1 billion.  In the settlement reached in May 2018, the total amount is $210,290,724, with $170 million of the total to be paid by insurance.  The archdiocese would be responsible for $40 million.  Legal costs for the victims would come out of the settlement, and the legal costs for the archdiocese were approximately $20 million.

After the announcement of the settlement, Archbishop Hebda again apologized to the victims.  He told reporters that the deal would provide resolution for the victims while still allowing the church to continue in its mission.  Victims saw the settlement as a victory but also cautioned that the scandal was not over.  Abuse survivor and head of the creditors committee during the bankruptcy Jim Keanan told reporters that the victims in this case proved that a settlement could be done in a different way than the church thought possible.  According to him, the church would now have to listen to the victims, and settlements like this made the world safer.
