Sexual abuse scandal in Manchester New Hampshire diocese

In the ongoing scandal surrounding child sexual abuse in the Catholic church, every state in the U.S. has its own chapter. The Granite state is no exception. In 2002, the world started to become aware of the scope of the problem following a series of Boston Globe investigative reports. The articles revealed the presence of predator priests in their state, along with a longstanding pattern of high-level clergy protecting them and covering up their crimes. Church members in other areas started to demand similar exposure of predators in their area.

In early 2002, Bishop John McCormack of the Diocese of Manchester released the names of 14 priests in the diocese who had been publicly accused of sexually abusing children. Later that year, he stepped down from his position as head of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Ad Hoc Committee on Sexual Abuse.[4] Suspicions that he had not done enough to stop these priests would later be confirmed when McCormack admitted to reassigning pedophilic priests; however, he claimed he did not know the extent of their misdeeds due to poor record-keeping.

Following these revelations, church members as well as the New Hampshire Union Leader would call for his resignation.  During an October 2002 mass, members of the congregation publicly confronted him about a priest he had assigned to the parish despite the man having had an affair with a teenage boy. They accused him of lying and loudly demanded he step down, prompting him to shout “I’m not lying!”

Details of McCormack brushing aside abuse allegations are disturbing. For instance, in 1987, a man met with McCormack (then secretary for ministerial personnel in the Boston Archdiocese) to report abuse he suffered as a 16-year-old altar boy. The man, Peter Pillard, identified the abuser as Rev. George Rosenkranz, who had been arrested in 1981 for having sex with a man in a Sears Roebuck washroom. Despite this potentially corroborating detail, McCormack deemed Pollard’s account not credible and said “there is no sign that Father Rosenkranz is a sexually deviant personality.”  Based on incidents like these, experts said that “the crisis has undermined Bishop McCormack more thoroughly, perhaps, than any other sitting bishop besides Cardinal Bernard F. Law of Boston.”  McCormack would ultimately resign only in 2010.

Starting in 2002, the diocese began settling with large groups of abuse survivors who initiated civil suits against them. For instance, in May 2003, they settled with 61 claimants for a total of 6.5 million. The diocese had admitted it may have violated criminal law by failing to protect children from abuse. They agreed to pay $6.5 million, and McCormack signed a document stating that the Attorney General’s office had enough evidence for a criminal conviction. In all, the diocese agreed to pay $15.5 million to settle a total of 176 child abuse claims.
