New Jersey One More State to Begin Investigating Catholic Church Sex Abuse

August 2018 would be a turning point for people across the globe. Evidence of the sexual abuse of children by priests and other clergy, and the widespread coverup of it all, was spotlighted in a report put out by a grand jury from Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office conducted an 18 month investigation into the alleged abuse and coverup. The results were shocking. Over 300 priests had molested, raped, and created kiddy pornography, abusing more than 1,000 children over a span of 40 years.

Because of the gravity of the grand jury’s report, states across the U.S. and countries throughout the world are uniting with the cause and conducting their own investigations. New Jersey has created its own task force so the state can look into allegations of child sexual abuse, and the coverup, at the hands of clergy. A former prosecutor by the name of Robert Laurino will head the task force which will be given power to gather testimony and demand Catholic Church official release documents.

Attorney General for New Jersey, Gurbir Grewal said he was very troubled after reading the list of allegations that were in the Pennsylvanian grand jury report. He then stated it was his job to ensure the same thing didn’t happen to people in his state, but if it had, he would take action against them.

Abuses Did Happen in New Jersey

A former Cardinal with the Catholic Church, Theodore McCarrick, had in recent years been accused of having sex with a minor more than 50 years ago. He was also accused of having improper sexual relations with seminary students. An inquiry into the abuse with the minor was conducted and found to be credible. The two former priests were given settlements amounting to $180,000. One of the former priests is now a lawyer and said there was no system of reporting abuse in the church like there was in corporate America.

To date, it is unclear how many settlements have been paid out by the New Jersey Archdiocese. In most cases, lawyers for the Catholic Church require confidentiality agreements as part of the settlement. This is more than likely just another way for the church to hide what has been going on for years. Some states won’t allow a confidentiality agreement as part of a settlement but the state of New Jersey does.
