To the public, it’s outrageous enough when people in positions of authority realize or think child abuse has taken place and do nothing to stop it. However recent revelations have revealed that the reality is more serious: on many occasions, authority figures are involved in actively covering up the truth. This was the conclusion of a new grand jury report based on private files in the Pennsylvania catholic church. The report points to occurrences in six Catholic dioceses, Allentown, Erie, Greensburg, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh and Scranton. It details events going back 70 years and includes claims against over 300 predator clergy. The document is the most comprehensive report on child sexual abuse to have been generated anywhere in the USA. While these details are maddening to most sober and fair minded people, it comes as no surprise to the thousands of victims out there who have lived under a veil of silence and suffered for so long.

It is hard to fathom how child molesters in the church could be guarded; much less promoted. The report provides graphic specifics of many incidents as told by victims, and often as confessed by priests to colleagues or counselors, and the details are chilling. Some victims were teens back then, while others were very young-in one case the abuse started when the victim was only 18 months old.

One of the main lessons learned is that we need a nationwide overhaul on the statute of limitations or time limits for victims to bring a case. In most states today, there are draconian laws in place that make it difficult if not impossible for victims to get justice. Research indicates that it can take decades for a victim to find the courage to go public, yet most laws on the books require almost immediate action. Hopefully without enough public support, the Pennsylvania legislature will lead by example act and do the right thing to make sure that justice is served. Let’s hope they do, and more states follow suit.
