Parishioners In Washington in Conflict Over McCarrick Sex Abuse Scandal

Former Archbishop of Washington, D.C. Theodore McCarrick, has recently made news as one of the latest Catholic clergy to be accused of sex crimes during his time in ministry. Church officials in the U.S. were told about alleged sexual abuse by McCarrick that dated almost 50 years ago. The allegations, in reference to a 16 year old boy, were found to be credible and substantiated. Since that time, more individuals have come forward, including a man who says he was abused by McCarrick when he was 11 and others who, although adults at the time, were allegedly made to sleep with McCarrick when they were seminarians.

Although the former Archbishop has said he doesn’t recall the abuse that happened nearly 50 years ago, he has not addressed the other allegations. News has come out that in 2005 and 2007, two New Jersey Dioceses had secretly paid out settlements to men who claimed they had been abused by the former Archbishop as adults during the 1980s.

McCarrick served as Archbishop from 2001 to 2006. Many of these sex abuse allegations came prior to that time frame, which has many people in the Catholic Church asking how he kept rising in power in the church and who was protecting him. An investigation into that answer showed that high ranking officials in the Church, including bishops and the Pope himself were made aware of the many allegations against McCarrick.

A Church Divided

Catholics in the Washington, D.C. area are torn by what they have learned about McCarrick. Many are calling for parishioners to stop giving or tithing to the Archdiocese and to give directly to their parish. They no longer want their money going to pay off lawsuits or settlements for men who shouldn’t be in ministry to begin with. Others are supporting the Catholic Church saying it is the men that are corrupt within the church and not the church itself.

Catholic Church members are also calling for the Vatican to send someone to investigate the entire problem surrounding McCarrick and those who kept promoting him into more power. Senior church officials across the U.S. are beginning to address the problem and are calling for more transparency in the Catholic Church as a whole. The issue with McCarrick is far from isolated, but rather, one in a long line of sexual abuse allegations the Catholic Church has been and continues to face.
