The List of Abusers at St. John’s Abbey Continues to Grow
During 2017, St, John’s Abbey in Collegeville Minnesota settled 17 cases with sex abuse survivors against monks who had served at the abbey. St. John’s is one of the largest Benedictine monasteries and recent revelations have uncovered a history of abuse that stretches back decades. There was clearly an epidemic of abuse in the community that continues to come to light as more people come forward with their own experiences.

In 2016, a 15,000 page document detailed exactly who was involved, how the cover up was handled and who was simply shipped off to another location. Most recently, three more names were added to a growing list. Casimir Plakut, James Kelly and Augustine John Strub were all named as persons who were likely to have commited abuse. All three mean are dead and had left the church by the time of their deaths.

Despite a clear pattern of abuse, St. John’s claims that there have been zero incidents in the past 20 years. Most of the monks named have either died, left the clergy or been restricted in their practices. The abbey seems to want the public to believe that the problem ended with the initial monks who were formally named, yet there is no way to know just how many have been guilty of indecencies during the long history of the abbey.
As the Vatican begins to weigh in on the issue, it also becomes increasingly likely that leaders who were directly involved in cover ups will be named and punished if possible. Unfortunately, many of the cases date back to the 1960s, which means that many of the involved parties have since died.

The documents that the church has released show that leaders clearly ignored early warning signs and did little to nothing to prevent accused monks and priests of interacting with minors, traveling and belonging to the church. It is still unclear how the addition of three more names to a growing list will affect the abbey, the community and the church as a whole. Hopefully, it will, at the very least, result in stricter oversight and reporting so that the church is focused on prevention and not damage control.
