SCOPE AND NATURE OF THE PROBLEM - SEX ABUSE IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH
According to the John Jay Report, 4,392 priests received a total of 10,667 accusations of sexual abuse. Most reports of abuse that came after 2000 were acts of abuse that occurred years, sometimes decades earlier. The increase in reporting sexual abuse was speculated to be a result of the publicity from the ongoing sex abuse scandal and the amounts being awarded in civil settlements against dioceses around the country.

Compared to other studies of child sexual abuse, there are a number of differences found in the John Jay Report. In other studies, the numbers of female sexual abuse victims outnumber males, but 81 percent of the children abused by clergy were male. There is the possibility that the sexual abuse of male victims was unreported prior to the revelations of the extent of the Catholic sex abuse scandal.

The John Jay Report revealed that 77.4 percent of the victims of sexual abuse were over the age of eleven. Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone was criticized for perceiving the sexual abuse of minors to be a homosexual problem. Father Marcus Stock of the Catholic Bishop’s Conference of England and Wales stated there was no data that linked sexual orientation to the sexual abuse of children. He instead pointed to the researcher consensus that the abuse was a result of disordered attraction. Margaret Smith, a criminologist from John Jay College who participated in crafting the report, noted that participating in a homosexual act was different than identifying oneself as a gay man.
The report also found a link between predatory priests also having been the victims of sexual abuse. The data showed that those who were abused were significantly more likely to commit acts of sexual abuse on others.

Allegations of abuse have occurred in cities worldwide. A 2018 report found nearly 4,000 children, primarily boys, had been abused by Catholic clergy in Germany over the past 70 years. Thousands of children were reported to have been abused in Ireland, and six Irish priests were convicted of abuse between 1975 and 2011. In 2002, the Catholic Church apologized to victims in the Philippines for the abuse perpetrated by 200 priests over 20 years. In 2018, an Archbishop in Australia resigned after the revelation of his concealment of another priest’s sex abuse, and 34 Chilean bishops offered their resignations after a cover up there came to light.
