N.J. to investigate priest sex crimes and alleged cover-up by Catholic Church

Many victims of sexual abuse by Catholic clergy can attest that investigations into those members’ actions should have begun years, even decades ago. But even a belated investigation offers victims some chance of seeing the truth told and justice done. In New Jersey, as in many states, such a reckoning is on the way, set in motion by the revelations contained in a 2018 Pennsylvania grand jury report. The 1500-page document detailed horrific sexual abuse by 301 Keystone State priests over the course of 70 years; in many cases the crimes were well known to church insiders but covered up as offenders were shuffled from job to job.

The document forced church officials and law enforcement alike to acknowledge the scope of the problem. In New Jersey, the attorney general’s office responded by creating a special task force to investigate sexual abuse by clergy members. In September 2018, the attorney general announced the formation of the task force, which is headed by a prosecutor and will have subpoena power, enabling it to compel testimony and demand dioceses produce documents. In the Pennsylvania grand jury report, church internal documents provided crucial corroboration of victim accounts, showing that priests in some cases confessed their misdeeds to other officials and were still allowed to continue in their posts.

Even before the events of 2018, New Jersey was the site of a high-profile scandal. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who served as a bishop before being elevated to cardinal in 2001, was accused over the years of 3 incidents of sexual misconduct involving adults, 2 of which resulting in legal action and settlements. These incidents were never made public or reported to the Vatican.

In 2017, a witness came forward claiming to have been sexually abused by McCarrick as a teenager over 50 years ago. The incident was reported to law enforcement and McCarrick was removed from public ministry. He denies the accusation, which likely will not result in criminal proceedings due to statutes of limitations.

The church’s failure to act on the previous accusations has sparked heated criticism. The Dallas Charter, enacted in 2002, requires the church to report all child abuse accusations to law enforcement. Although the prior accusations against McCarrick involved adults, they were still alleged crimes. The incident shows the lack of transparency that once reigned in the church.
