Imagine if you were a young child.  You went to church every Sunday with your parents.  Your family was very active in their parish, and you go to know the priest very well and came to trust him.  Now imagine that that priest betrayed your trust and sexually assaulted you?  What would you do?  Would you tell someone?  Would they believe you?  Unfortunately, this is a sad reality for thousands of children.  For decades the Catholic Church has been engaged in a cover up of epic proportions.  Hiding the sexual abuse of minors by the clergy.  Of course not all priests are bad or involved in this criminal behavior, the numbers are startling.  In Pennsylvania alone, over 300 priests were recently named as being credibly accused of sexual assault.  How many priests in Iowa are involved in this unsavory behavior?  It is hard to pin down as the Iowa Attorney General has not followed suit (yet) and copied Pennsylvania.  That may change as political pressure ramps up and the general public becomes more aware of the problem.

Iowa is no stranger to this controversy.  Take the example of the Davenport Diocese.  They reported that one of their priests has been accused by over 30 people of sexual abuse.  The accusations against the priest stretch as far back as 1956 when an altar boy in the Joliet Diocese was assaulted by James Jansen.

The Quad-City Times reported that “The victim's mother found obscene letters between the boy and Janssen, and she told her parish priest, who wrote to officials in Davenport, the records state. Janssen was allowed to return to Davenport and continue in several assignments, records state.” When in contact with a reporter for the article, “Janssen stated that he was dying of cancer and declined to offer any statement or apology to the victims.”

How convenient.  Refuse to offer any statement of apology.  This really crystalizes the problem.  Not only do sexual assaulters refuse to apologize for their behavior, but they don’t even go to jail to pay for their crimes.  Why in the world was a priest allowed to continue in his job for almost 40 years after being accused of such a thing?  Moving a priest to another post does not solve the problem.  In fact, it probably makes the problem worse.  Now the priest thinks he has a clean slate.  Nobody in the new community has any idea that he has been accused.

The massive scale of the harm done by Janssen reveals the need for accurate record-keeping, as well as a zero-tolerance policy for people who harm even one child.
