Catholic Archdiocese of Boston sex abuse scandal

The child sex abuse scandals in the archdiocese of Boston have been among the most well-publicized ever. The events there influenced how child sexual abuse has been viewed and responded throughout the world.

In one sense, the story began in January 2002. It was then that the Boston Globe published the first of its Spotlight series on predators in the church. It focused on Father John Geoghan, who, it was revealed, had been shuffled from place to place, never being removed from positions of trust despite a well-documented history of serial child rape. Geoghan held multiple positions throughout Massachusetts in the 1960s and 70s.

In 1980, a priest told Bishop Thomas Vose Daily that Geoghan had admitted to molesting boys. He was ordered to undergo counseling, but returned to the priesthood, where he abused boys again. In 1982 the families of boys molested by Geoghan complained to Daily, but the ultimate result was that he was transferred by Cardinal Bernard Law to another parish, where he was put in charge of youth groups. Geoghan was ultimately accused of abusing over 130 children; he was defrocked in 1998 and sentenced to prison time in 2002 for groping a boy in a swimming pool.

Still, the Globe report was the first time the world would learn how widespread knowledge of his crimes had been in the catholic hierarchy.  Other Globe reports detailed facts about other predators, including Joseph Birmingham, who got away with molesting boys for 23 years (and who was covered up for by Law, who wrote to an anxious mother that “He assured me there is absolutely no factual basis to your concern regarding your son and him.”); James Talbot, who taught and coached sports at Boston College High School, and ultimately was convicted of rape; and Robert Gale, who was also convicted of rape in 2004. He had been placed in treatment for molestation in 1987, but Cardinal Law signed off on allowing him to remain in his role as priest.

As the investigative reports appeared, more victims came forward, and more investigations were conducted around the world, revealing the massive scale of the crimes and cover-up. In response to these revelations, many dioceses changed their policies to institute safe environment policies and unbiased boards to investigate accusations of abuse.
With the clear evidence that Cardinal Law had protected predator priests during his time as archbishop of Boston, 50 priests signed a letter of no confidence in him, and he resigned.

The events in Boston are an example of the secrets within the church that are waiting to be discovered; until every diocese undergoes a full investigation, the full truth will not be known.
