Nebraska AG Begins Probe Into Catholic Church Child Sex Abuse Claims

The state of Nebraska has three Catholic dioceses: Omaha, Lincoln, and Grand Island. Each of these dioceses have been directed to give any and all records related to sexual abuse by priests or clergy to the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office. Nebraska AG Doug Peterson is asking for the last 40 years of records. He is taking aim at the Catholic Church in response to the grand jury report out of Pennsylvania in August this year. That report exposed the widespread child sexual abuse from priests and clergy. Over 1,000 victims were abused at the hands of 301 priests.

In AG Peterson’s letter he asks for any records of abuse, exploitation, child pornography, or any type of sexual communication with another person by someone who had any authority for the church. Although each state’s AG has different jurisdictions, the AG for Nebraska has the authority to investigate and prosecute any reports of child sexual assault or abuse throughout Nebraska. According to AG Peterson, his office has received numerous reports that he feels warrant further investigation.

Catholic Church Will Work with OAG

After receiving the letters from the Office of the Attorney General, all three diocese said they would comply and work with the AG. According to Archbishop Lucas of the Omaha Diocese, he said he welcomes the accountability. Although this response seems reasonable, there have been other bishops in the U.S. who haven’t been so acquiescent. One of those same bishops was from Nebraska. A former bishop from Lincoln would not participate in the church’s own investigation by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops after the widespread abuse was reported by the Boston Globe in 2002. The Lincoln diocese has since complied since 2016.

Some bishops have argued that there’s no purpose served by opening records of priests who have died. They say it will only bring grief to the priest’s family and that it’s essentially not fair for them to not have an opportunity to defend themselves.  As the grand jury report out of Pennsylvania exposed, many of these priests and clergy had multiple or many victims, and there’s little doubt who was involved. So to say it wouldn’t be fair to a deceased priest is merely trying to hide more reports and keep the Catholic Church looking as good as possible, if that is possible anymore at this point in time.
