Pennsylvania Child Sex Abuse Report Shows Catholic Priest Served in Colorado
Stephen Jeselnick was one of the hundreds of Catholic priests and clergymen who was named in a scathing report by the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s report on abuse in the church. The report stated that over 1,000 children had been sexually abused by over 300 clergymen over the past 70 years. Jeselnick had repeatedly sexually assaulted three brothers in Pennsylvania during the late 70s. According to the brothers who spoke to the grand jury, his abuse included fondling, oral sex, and sodomy. The sexual abuse took place at their home and at the church, where their mother also worked.

Soon afterwards Jeselnick moved to Colorado for a trial assignment. He ended up working at St. Mary’s Church in Littleton, the Shrine of St. Anne Church located in Arvada, and then moved to Colorado Springs where he worked as an assistant pastor at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. The Colorado Springs Diocese denied Jeselnick formal acceptance when he requested it and he soon left to go work as a Chaplain in the Air Force, whose academy is located in Colorado Springs.

The Bishop in Erie, Pennsylvania received a request of suitability in ministry from Jeselnick in 2014. After doing some research, the Bishop denied his request and told him he wouldn’t be granted permission ever again to serve the public in ministry, over 30 years after reports that his abuse had started.

According to the Archdiocese of Denver, they never received any reports of sexual misconduct during Jeselnick’s time in ministry in Colorado. The Denver Archdiocese has implemented a policy of mandatory reporting when anyone involved with the church is charged with abuse and that person much report it to the church leaders as well as law enforcement.

Due to the widespread abuse in the Catholic Churches of Pennsylvania, many other states have begun to look deeper into the issue. Colorado is one of those states. Colorado Attorney General Cynthia Coffman (R) has stated that the church has proven it can’t safeguard its own and that her office will soon determine the role it can play in holding these predators responsible. She believes that there should be independent investigations by law enforcement since the church has shown throughout the years that it will go to great lengths to protect its own, even when it is protecting predators and pedophiles within its own walls.
