Diocese in Northern Indiana Lists Priests Who Sexually Abused Children

The Pennsylvanian grand jury that released its report of sexually abused children at the hands of Catholic clergy named 301 men guilty of harming 1,000 children, although it is suspected there are thousands more victims. Now, the diocese in Northern Indiana has named a total of 18 men who have been similarly accused. Bishop Kevin Rhoades who is over the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese released the list of names, churches the men served at, and the dates they served. Some of the dates go back as far as 1922.
Eight of the named men are dead, 10 of them were removed from ministry, and the remaining two are serving time for their crimes. The Bishop’s list failed to include more specific details of when or where the abuse occurred or if there were more names that had been given to police in recent years.

Ties to Pennsylvania

Bishop Rhoades served as Bishop in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania prior to taking the position in Indiana. He served in Pennsylvania from 2004 to 2009, and has been the Bishop at the Fort Wayne-South Bend Diocese since 2010. He called the report of sexual abuse of children in Pennsylvania both, “appalling and heartbreaking.” His goal in publicizing the names was to help victims to continue their healing.

Was Rhoades Just Saving Face?

However, documents out of the grand jury report show a different response from Bishop Rhoades during his time in Pennsylvania. According to the report, Bishop Rhoades had been hesitant to give details of any allegations against two former priests because he didn’t want any scandalous information about the church to become public. This was taken directly from a letter he had written to officials at the Vatican. Both priests he was trying to protect are now deceased. The report shows Bishop Rhoades did alert law enforcement and higher level clergy in the church about the allegations.

According to Bishop Rhoades, one of the survivors of the abuse had asked him to release the list of names of all men accused, including that of her abuser, Rev. Elden Miller who served as a priest at Peace Church and St. Joseph Church. Rev. Miller passed away in 2008, but in addition to the woman who asked that the names be released, Rev. Miller had an additional three accusers.

Bishop Rhoades has stated that any new information regarding other abuse or priests that have been accused will be added to the list.
