The Catholic Church in Pennsylvania is still reeling after the explosive report was recently released. Unparalleled in its size and scope, a grand jury investigated alleged cases of abuse for over 2 years. The results will take your breath away, with over 1,000 confirmed victims of sexual abuse. If that isn’t enough to knock the wind out of your sails, the report estimated there were probably many more victims, numbering in the thousands. Knowledge of these crimes went all the way up to the Vatican. Pennsylvania is a big state and it has six Catholic dioceses.

Fortunately, the moves in Pennsylvania have reverberated across the country. For example, the Attorney General for Illinois has already launched a similar investigation vowing that her state will give a “complete and accurate accounting” of any child sexual abuse that occurred at the hands of priests.
AG Madigan plans to meet with leaders of the Catholic Church throughout Illinois and the Archdiocese of Chicago has already agreed to have meetings with her. Obviously the church has a moral obligation to give an accurate and complete accounting of any sexually inappropriate behavior or crimes to their parishioners and to the public at large.

The Chicago Archdiocese has declared they will discuss their policies and procedures when it comes to misconduct with the AG and her office. That church indicated that they have reported all abuses and allegations to local authorities since 2002, which leads to the obvious question. What did the church do with allegations prior to 2002. Hopefully any investigation will get to the bottom of this mystery.

Rev. James Somma was once of the priests named in the PA grand Jury report who also happened to serve in Illinois. One victim alleged that he was abused between the years 1984 to 1992. Yes, you read that right. 8 years of abuse. In a report that came out in in the late 1980s, it stated that Rev. Somma shouldn’t be allowed to have minors in his home due to the increasing sensitivity of priests and their relationships with children. However, even though it was believed he had already abused several children, Somma was still allowed to continue working as a priest for another 14 years.
