After a priest has been accused of sexual abuse, the Catholic Church has historically sheltered them by moving them to different parishes or sending them to psychiatric treatment. For priests whose allegations become public or who are serial offenders, there are three primary ways for them to leave the priesthood either voluntarily or involuntarily.
Many of the priests accused of sexual abuse as well as those who shielded them have opted for retirement. In normal cases, retirement for a priest from a diocese requires a minimum age of 70, though some dioceses allow full retirement only at age 75. Some priests who were accused of sexual abuse were forced into retirement to remove them from scrutiny. In one example, the Reverend Donald W. Becker of the Diocese of Buffalo, New York was placed on medical leave in 2002 and quietly retired in 2011 after sexual abuse allegations of incidents that occurred in the 1970s came to light.

Priests can offer their resignation or be forced to resign after allegations are presented against them, and resignation has also become common among church leaders who have participated in abuse cover ups. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, the former archbishop of Washington D.C., resigned in July 2018 after several allegations of abuse were levied against him. McCarrick was accused of abusing boys and adult seminarians over the course of his career. McCarrick became the first person to resign from the College of Cardinals since 1927. Pope Francis accepted the resignation and ordered a life of prayer and penance until a canonical trial could be held to examine the allegations.

Laicization, sometimes known as defrocking, is the loss of the clerical state. When a priest is laicized, his titles, powers, rights, and authority are removed and he has the status of a lay person. When laicized, priests are not allowed to wear clerical dress, perform ceremonies, or administer the sacraments. They are still required to practice celibacy, and they are allowed to confect the Eucharist. When priests voluntarily laicize themselves, there is no determination of guilt in the accusations of abuse. Priests may also be forcefully laicized after a canonical trial. Once laicized, the priest is no longer provided an income from the church as all formal ties are severed. It is very rare for a bishop to be laicized, but Archbishop Jozef Weslowski was given a canonical trial after allegations of abuse arose against him, and he was laicized in 2014. Weslowski died before he could face the criminal charges pending against him.
